It has been 400 turns since the 8th Pass ended. Pernese population is booming, but the dragons, who sole duty it was to protect Pern have fallen into decline.
After the Upheaval, and dragon population weeding out the former colors of dragonkind, there remained only two Weyrs. High Reaches to the west and Sabishi to the east. High Reaches has retreated behind their mountain walls, leaving Sabishi to fend for theirselves.
The former Weyrwoman grew too old and her Midori stopped Flying, leaving her Junior Weyrwoman, Haruka as the leader of the Weyr. Haruka's Nagith later had her Flight, replacing the former Weyrleader with new blood.
The Red star burns bright in the sky though, so when Nagith laid a clutch of 25 eggs with a Queen egg, the Weyr celebrated. Searchriders were sent out immediately, but were mostly unsuccessful, as the Holds didn't want to believe that Thread would return and most refused to allow the people Searched to leave.
Now its growing close to time for the eggs to hatch, and Sabishi is getting desperate. High Reaches refused to help, leaving Sabishi to deal with their own problems. So the riders did the unthinkable, and stole the Candidates they needed. A rider would go to a Hold, and find a person. Then, using their method of choice, the rider wouls smuggle the person back to their dragon and bring them to the Weyr. Some Candidates came willingly, but not enough. Anyone who was stolen against their will was kept under careful watch to prevent them from running away before the Hatching.
Finally, enough Candidates were gathered, and the Weyr waits eagerly for the eggs to start rocking and to welcome the new riders to Pern. While the Hatching wasn't entirely without disaster, 25 new Weyrlings start their training soon.
A Gather was held following the Hatching, with Firelizards and nearly unknown feline dubbed the Mrreow. A few of the Weyrfolk bonded to both, and the sight of the new Weyrlings brought much attention to the Weyr.
Sweep-riders have been reporting an unusual amount of travel near the Weyr, bearing the colors of surrounding holds. Scouts placed in the Holds to find potential candidates have been passing along feelings of disquiet and mistrust towards the Weyr. Rebellion seems to be barely contained, and Haruka is afraid that she won't be able to convince the Holds that the Dragonriders need to keep surviving.
