No one knows exactly what happened to dragonkind, though Harpers later dubbed the event the Upheaval.
Just after the end of the 8th Pass, the next generation of Weyrlings turned out different than any previous ones. For starters, the color ratio flipped around, with more Golds and less Greens. As the Weyrlings grew, they seemed to switch sizes and rankings. The Greens flat out refused to chew firestone, and the Golds lost their authority over the lesser colors. The browns didn't seem to change, though Blues and Bronzes had the same switch up happen to them as well.
Soon after the Weyrlings started changing, the older dragons began to be affected. Green dragons that had been fighting Thread for turns suddenly stopped chewing, and the Queens discovered the same loss of authority that the Weyrling Queens did.
The Weyrs tried taking it in stride, but turns of Tradition were hard to rewrite. An even more interesting wrench was thrown in the gears when the Greens starting having mating Flights like Golds did, blooding their kills, and longer Flights. The result, not entirely unexpected, was Greens laying clutches. Large clutches, with larger eggs than would be expected.
The contents of the clutches were similar to the earlier ones, mostly consisting of gold and bronze colored dragons, but these didn't call themselves Bronze and Gold. The gold ones took on the name Kin, and the bronze called themselves Dou. That wasn't the last surprise of the clutches either, as six new colors came about: the black Kuroi, the pink Sakura, the purple Murasaki, the orange Kohaku, the silver Gin, and the red Ichigo. The other three colors, plus the White sport all had changes too. The Browns became Chairo, the Blue became Aoi, and the final two, the White and the Green? When the new ones hatched, the demanded that they be called Queen. The White turned out to be always female now, and called themselves Shiroi. The Greens though, that were once so small and lowly, proclaimed themselves Queen of all, and that they were now to be called Midori.
As the turns passed, the new dragon riders continued and the old Tradition was slowly forgotten, in all but Harper's tales. The dragons did start to lay smaller and fewer clutches though, now that the Pass was over, and soon the Weyrs started combining to boost numbers. Now that its nearing 400 turns since the Pass ended, only two Weyrs remain...
