-Mrreow-
A species of large cat that is not native to Pern, instead it was introduced into Pern wildlife by accident. These creatures make the Southern Continent their home, though the occasional brave Fisher or Trader may be able to capture them and bring them to the Northern Continent. They are occasionally seen as the pets of Holders, as when raised from kittenhood, the Mrreow are as tame as any of their smaller kin, the feline.
Mrreow were introduced to the same metasynth that was used on firelizards and dragons, and years of breeding has caused them to be quite intelligent. They are telepathic, and have speech patterns similar to a young child, using small words and short sentences. They also have a tendency to growl, hiss, or roll letters when saying words that contain natural feline sounds in them.
Mrreow form Impression type bonds to humans, but a person can only bond to one Mrreow at a time. Similar to Firelizards, If the person Bonded dies, the Mrreow go wild, though they always retain a sense of domestication, and will never attack a human if it was once Bonded. If the Mrreow dies, the human will feel the death, but unlike dragons, it will have no adverse affect on them.
There is no real ranking among the Mrreow, though they tend to live in patriarchal Prides in the wild, and if there are enough domestic Mrreow, they can form a pride as well. Females are much more common than males, and unlike dragons, it is usually the male who does the preening to attract a mate, choosing from the females that are in heat at the time.
The following are the various marking Mrreow can come in. Due to years of interbreeding, the various species of Mrreow have merged into one breed, with the only real difference being the size associate with the markings, but even that isn't set in stone. Full grown Mrreow range from 2-3 feet at the shoulder, with lions leaning to the larger and cougars leaning towards the smaller. The ratio at the end is Male/Female.
Lion-
Male
Female
Lion markings are a tawny coated feline, occasionally with pale spots or stripes. They are the largest of the Mrreow, and the males are graced with a bushy mane, highly sought after as they are the only males to have such. Ratio is about 1/8.
Tiger-
Tigers are arguably the most varied of the Mrreow markings, coming in anything from tawny to goldenrod to orange, or even to blue-grey or white. They are known for the stripes that grace their body from head to toe. The stripes are usually a darker shade of the base coat. Ratio is about 1/4
Cheetah-
Regular
King
Cheetah marked Mrreow are a bit more lithe or leggy than the others, lending them speed. They are usually tawny or golden colored with black spots all over. A variation has larger splotchy spots and three stripes down their back. Ratio is 1/3
Leopard/Panther-
Normal
Panther
Leopard are smaller Mrreow, but a little bulkier. Golden yellow coats graced with large spots are the main color, though a sub-color is smaller still, but thinner, and have charcoal colored fur with large black spots all over. Ratio is 1/5
Irbis(Snow Leopard)-
The Irbis is a larger, bulkier Mrreow usually only found in the colder regions due to the fact that it's fur is much thicker than other Mrreow. They have a pattern similar to leopards, but with larger spots. They can be blue-grey, white, or desaturated gold/tawny with black spots. Ratio is around 1/3
Cougar-
Cougar might be the plainest when it comes to markings, but they come in the most varied of colors, from white to tan to orange, or even chocolate brown. Around their muzzle and the end of their tail is a splash of darker coloring. Ratio is about 1/3.
