Delvina had heard the call - but she had been taught never to rush. Plan every moment, act carefully - behave like a Lady. She returned to her room, stopping to change & groom her hair. It would only take a few minutes. As she brushed and fluffed her hair, choosing a nice simple dress to go under her robe. It hung lower than her robe, peeking out with a soft pink fabric under the white. Turning an eye over her jewellery, she settled on a set of neat crystal drops. One for each ear and one longer stone about her neck. This hung on fine steel chain - a particular pride. For even in the mining hold, steel was a rare commodity. The chain was worth more than the stones, she knew. And this would set just the right image. She wished for a flower to lace into her hair - but she simply didn't have time.
Delvina found the Weyr halls empty from all but distant noise. She wanted to run - but her father wouldn't... No- her father wouldn't say anything at all. He wasn't here - so now she could run! Her new sandals pinched as she did - but she didn't care. For once she she could run - she could even skip down the halls and noone would stop her!
So it this happy, skipping figure that bounced into the hatching grounds. But few paid her much head now. The hatching had started - and dragons... There were so many dragons! Had every dragon in Pern come? Big ones lined the walls, climbing up into the roof! And tiny dragons - much much smaller than the eggs sat between them in little clumps. Those must be the fire lizard's - what else could be that small? And... Oh! Eggs were trembling & hatched dragons stumbled out, all slick and crooning for their chosen.
Unfamiliar with the practice, Delvina stepped towards the other's in her robes. Boys milled about on one side of the room - whilst girls seemed to form little clumps together on the other. Having noone to join, Delvina walked into the middle, standing between them all. Then she bowed low to the Queen who had born this brood, before lifting her head to meet the hatchlings. Was she supposed to go out towards them? Or did they come to you - like the merchants did? She really ought to have been listening more in that lesson. But there was so much to see here - how could anyone listen when you had dragons to watch anyway? And well, their riders had been rather distracting too...
